The best team running online retail and software giant Matthew Molding’s THG

The online retailer and software giant has grown into one of the North West’s biggest companies since its inception in 2004.

The Manchester-based company was set up by Matthew Molding and John Gallemore and floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2020.

The move valued the group at £5.4billion at the time, but its fortunes have fared less well since then, with its share price falling and investors raising concerns.

In May, THG’s board ‘unanimously’ rejected a £2.07bn takeover bid from two investment firms as a bid emerged from a capital firm -risk controlled by real estate magnate Nick Candy.

A private equity tycoon also recently resigned from THG’s board, two days before the group’s general meeting.

So who controls THG and who sits on its board? Below, BusinessLive profiles each member of THG’s top team.

Matthew Casting

Matthew Molding is the Managing Director of THG, which he founded in 2004.

According to his website, he played an “instrumental” role in THG’s growth, having evolved it from an entertainment retailer to a vertically integrated global e-commerce technology group.

Before setting up the group, he was chief financial officer of 20:20 Mobile, the distribution arm of the Caudwell Group, where he worked for eight years before leading its private equity sale for £365million.

Mr Molding studied industrial economics at the University of Nottingham before earning his chartered accountancy qualification from Arthur Anderson in 1998.

The CEO recently lost his billionaire status after THG’s share price fell over the past 12 months, according to the latest Sunday Times rich list.

In March, he resigned as president of THG.

Charles Allen, Lord Allen of Kensington

Mr Molding was succeeded as chairman by Lord Charles Allen, whose business career spans from media to hospitality.

He is best known for his contribution to the television industry, having played a key role in the creation of ITV.

He is currently Chairman of Global Media & Entertainment, Balfour Beatty and the Invictus Games Foundation.

He is also advisory chairman of Moelis & Company. He was Chairman of Granada Media, Managing Director of Granada Group and ITV and Chairman of EMI Music, Endemol and the British Red Cross.

He has also served on the board of Tesco, Virgin Media and GET AS, and was senior adviser to the Home Office and senior adviser to Goldman Sachs.

Lord Allen was Vice-Chairman of the London 2012 Bid Company, Non-Executive Director of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games Organizing Committee and Chairman of the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games.

In 2002 he received a CBE for his service to sport and community and in 2012 he was made a Knight Bachelor for his service to the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

He was granted freedom from the City of London in 2006. In 2013 he received a peerage and sits on the Labor benches.

John Gallemore

John Gallemore is THG’s Chief Financial Officer and has held this position since 2004.

He previously held the position of Head of Finance in the international trade division of the Caudwell Group from 2001 to 2004.

He began his career at Deloitte, where he graduated as a chartered accountant in 1994.

Zillah Byng Thorne

Zillah Byng-Thorne is currently the Managing Director and Executive Director of Future Plc.

She has been a non-executive director of THG since 2018 and also sits on the boards of GoCompare (where she is also chair of the audit committee) and Flutter (where she is also chair of the risk committee and a member of the risk committees. audit and appointment).

She is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. In the past, she held various positions, such as Chief Financial Officer at Thresher Group, Chief Financial Officer at First Quench Group and Managing Director at Auto Trader.

She holds a postgraduate degree from Henley Business School and a degree from the University of Glasgow.

Edward Koopman

Edward Koopman is currently a member of the executive committee and responsible for Europe at Sofina.

He has been a non-executive director of THG since 2016. He sits on the board of directors of Nuxe Group, an international skincare brand based in France, of GL Events, a listed global player in events, and of Sofina Capital.

He was previously founding partner at Electra Partners/Cognetas Private Equity, manager at Bain & Co, and worked in investment banking at Baring Brothers and BNPP. He graduated from EM Lyon Business School.

Iain McDonald

Iain McDonald is the founder and chief investment officer of Belerion Capital, which he created in 2018.

Prior to founding Belerion, he worked as Chief Investment Officer of the William Currie Group.

Notable investments have included ASOS, THG, Boohoo, Metapack, Eagle Eye Solutions, Anatwine and Lifeworks.

He has been a non-executive director of THG since 2010 and is also a non-executive director of Boohoo (where he is also chairman of the remuneration committee and a member of the audit and nomination committees).

Damien Sander

Damian Sanders joined THG as a special advisor and member of the audit and risk committee before joining the board in November 2020.

As a former senior equity audit partner at Deloitte, he has experience advising large international listed companies on audit, accounting, corporate governance and other compliance matters. regulation, in addition to advising on the implementation of financial and commercial strategies.

Major recent clients at Deloitte have included AO and EG Group. He is also an FCA qualified member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales and an independent non-executive director of Cineworld.

Dr Andreas Hanson

Dr. Andreas Hansson is an investor and advisor with experience across the entire business life cycle.

Until recently, he was Managing Director of SB Management, having joined the SoftBank Group in 2017, and was a Partner at SoftBank Investment Advisers until August 2020.

Dr. Hansson also serves on the board of AutoStore Holdings, the provider of automated storage and retrieval systems, and as Chairman of the Board of Kahoot! ASA, an EdTech platform.

Prior to joining SoftBank, he held several positions at Arm Ltd., where he served as Technical Advisor to the Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, leading strategic activities around business development and incubation.
